Optical Properties and Solar Cell Applications of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotubes (invited presentation)

Abstract:

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess electrical and optical properties which make them suitable for various optical and optoelectronic applications. One of the important illustrations of such potentials is the discovery of optical antenna effects of vertically aligned CNTs grown by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, a method widely used thanks to its simplicity and readiness for scaling up. Besides having physical sizes suitable for electromagnetic resonances at the optical frequencies, these CNTs are of metallic nature due to their multi-graphene atomic structures, which enhances their interaction with light. This interaction provides an intriguing opportunity to manipulate light at the nanoscale in a solar cell by using these CNTs properly. I will further discuss preliminary results on carefully incorporating CNTs into thin film solar cells in a nanocoax configuration to enhance light trapping and promote solar cell performances.
