RAFT Polymerisation for delivery of bioactives

J. Chiefari

Keywords: polymers, bioactives, delivery

The RAFT (Reverse Addition-Fragmentation chain Transfer) process is a ground breaking technology that offers unprecedented control over the composition, functionality and architecture of polymers. The versatility of the RAFT technology provides enormous potential for designing and developing multi-functional polymers that are optimised for enhanced performance. RAFT offers users a method to make “smarter” polymers. Whereas traditional approaches yield not one type of material but a disperse blend of many with little or no control over molecular structure, RAFT offers a mechanism to rationally design low polydispersity systems that can be developed to formulate and /or deliver “bioactives” in various market sectors including biomedical, agricultural and personal care in a predictable and customisable way. With a large number of actives coming off patent, formulators from these market segments are seeking innovative techniques for adding value and improving performance of products including the development of new more targeted delivery solutions. Moreover, with bioactive development costs increasing, identifying ways to re-activate programs which have failed due to in-field delivery has heighted interest for smarter formulation and delivery systems
