This symposium focuses on recent technology development for nano and microfibrillated cellulosed materials with application in a broad range of products as well as on manufacturing technology to create new economically viable materials from cellulose. Cellulose is the most abundant organic polymer on earth. It can be produced by plants, animals, algae and bacteria. While numerous products already contain cellulose in one form or another, products developed from nano-scale or microfibrillated cellulose are just emerging. Cellulose nanomaterials have dimensions ranging from a few nanometers to microns with high surface area-to-volume ratio, high strength properties comparable to Kevlar; they are highly functionalizable and they have low environmental impact.
