Anupama B. Kaul is a Program Director for Electronics, Photonics and Magnetic Devices in the Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems (ECCS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Her research interests lie in integrating novel nanoscale materials into devices exhibiting unique functionality for enhancing the performance of components useful in electronics, sensing and energy harnessing applications. Dr. Kaul joined NSF from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology (CalTech) in September 2011 through the IPA agreement.

At JPL, Caltech, Dr. Kaul has managed interdisciplinary research programs in the areas of nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS), novel miniaturized physical sensors, high frequency electronics, and carbon-based nanomaterials useful for IR detectors and energy harnessing applications. Recently, she has also supported programmatic review activities at JPL for technology development in support of various NASA calls in planetary science. Prior to JPL, Dr. Kaul was at Motorola Labs where she conducted research on RF-MEMS switches formed on flexible substrates using organic materials. She has also been in Hewlett-Packard’s R&D Division where she conducted research on surface micro-machined ink-jet MEMS technology.

Dr. Kaul obtained her B.S. degrees with Honors in Physics, as well as in Engineering Physics, from Oregon State University. Her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees were in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, with minors in Electrical Engineering and Physics. She has more than 70 journal, conference and NASA Technology Brief publications, 9 issued and pending patents, and 1 NASA Team Accomplishment Award.

Dr. Kaul is a Senior Member of the IEEE and has also contributed to several invited book chapters on nanoscale science and technology, in addition to serving as a guest Editor for various journals. She is active in chairing conferences for the IEEE, SPIE and serves on the program review committees of other conferences including the Nano Science and Technology Institute (NSTI). Presently, Dr. Kaul serves as the American Editor for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Letters, Associate Editor of Reviews in Advanced Sciences and Engineering and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Nanoengineering and Nanomanufacturing and the Open Process Chemistry Journal.
