Dr. Bob Welch is a Research Physicist, DB-V (GS-15 equivalent) in the Information Technology Laboratory of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center. He leads a multi-disciplinary group of 3 teams performing multi-scale simulations, multi-scale diagnostics, and advanced material synthesis to develop the generation-after-next structural materials. The goal is to produce materials with several fold improvements in mechanical properties such as strength, strength-to-weight, and stiffness-to-weight ratios. Nanotechnology is essential to meeting these goals and is the new frontier for improving many areas of engineering technology. Bob has been involved in simulation-lead material development since 2005. He has a BS in Physics from Old Dominion University, an MS in Engineering Mechanics from Mississippi State University, and a PhD in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech, and is a member of the ASCE, the American Physical Society, and the IEEE. He has over 100 journal and conference publications; 6 patents and 2 patents pending; has been Managing Editor and Associate Editor for several technical journals; and is Emeritus Director of the Shock and Vibration Information Analysis Center. He has 44 government and professional awards, including a U.S. Presidential Letter of Commendation and the 2009 Researcher of the Year Award for the Corps of Engineers. Bob is a member of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology Subcommittee that oversees the National Nanotechnology Initiative.
