Non-Enzymatic Alloy Catalysts for Glucose Oxidation in Bio Fuel Cell

Summary:

Bio fuel cells using glucose as a fuel are receiving a great attention as a power sources for the implantable devices in human body. Electrons are generated through oxidation of glucose at enzymatic catalysts. However, the enzymatic catalysts have several drawbacks such as low stability, low durability, and complexities in the electrode structures. In order to solve the problems, metal catalysts of binary and ternary alloy are continuously suggested as possible replacements. In this study, Au-free NiCu alloy catalysts were fabricated and characterized as new catalysts for glucose oxidation. The alloys were electrodeposited on glassy carbon by modulating the deposition conditions. As shown in figure 1, we have prepared pure Cu, pure Ni, and a series of NiCu alloys with different composition. Various analyses including spectroscopic characterization and electrochemical test for the glucose oxidation have been performed. For example, the activity toward glucose oxidation was tested by cyclic voltammetry in 0.3M NaOH solution containing 15mM glucose. The results is presented in figure 2 and it is clearly shown in the figure that the fabricated NiCu alloy catalysts exhibits significantly increased activity to glucose oxidation compared to pure Ni or Cu catalyst.
