Summary:

Patterned FTO electrodes were obtained by wet etching process. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) fabricated by patterned FTO electrodes showed higher efficiency. The best device performance was achieved as the etching time was between 210 s and 240 s. An optimum depth of the circular pattern approximative to 180 nm to 220 nm was required to acquire the highest efficiency. More further etching was unfavorable for device performance. The improved efficiency could be attributed to increased surface area of FTO, leading to more contact between TiO2 nanoparticles and FTO. Furthermore, larger amounts of TiO2 nanoparticles covered on patterned FTO electrode caused more dye adsorption. Light harvesting and light scattering in the DSSCs were thereby enhanced. This study has demonstrated that patterned FTO electrode with an appropriate depth could improve DSSC performance.
