Dr. Zhao’s degrees are in Chemistry (1985, Sichuan Univ.), and Chemistry / Physics (M.D.1996 & Ph.D. 1999, Tokyo, Japan). He moved to Chinese Academy of Sciences from RIKEN (Japan) as a Hundred Elite Professor in 2001. He is a founder of CAS Nanosafety Lab, and also one of the earliest scientists who proposed and studied the nanotoxicology. He is also the founder and co-director of the Research Center for Cancer Nanotechnology, Tianjin Cancer Hospital & CAS.

He is mainly focusing on the biomedical effects of nanostructure/nanoscale materials, including:

(1) The biomedical functions of manufactured nanomaterials including the cancer nanotechnology: development of low-toxic chemotherapeutics with nanostructured particles themselves or as carriers, and the early diagnosis of cancer cells at a single cell level based on complexed nanosystem/nanovectors;

(2) The toxicological effects of nanomaterials including identification of nano-hazards using animal, cellular and molecular models; methodological and metrological development for detecting nanoparticle in biological systems; drafting regulatory frameworks and nano-standards for safety issues on nanotechnology and establishing standard procedures for safety assessment of nano-products for governmental agencies;

(3) The surface chemistry of nanoparticles and their novel properties for the purposes of enhancing the biomedical functions or reducing the potential toxicity;

(4) The MD theoretical simulation and modeling the dynamic processes of the interplay between nano-systems (like nanotubes) and bio-systems (like bio-membrane or ion channels).

Prof. Zhao has published about 200 journal articles including about 130 papers in international journals, and about 70 papers in domestic Chinese journals, two books on “Nanotoxicology” published in USA in 2007 and China in 2010. He is the Editor for 10 series books on aspects for biological effects and safe applications of manufactured nanomaterials, published by China Scientific Press. He has been invited and given more than 110 Invited Lectures at international/domestic conferences, universities and institutes. He was invited and serves as the Associate Editor for Biomedical Microdevices (USA), Particle & Fiber Toxicology (UK), and Journal of Nanosciences and Nanotechnology (USA), and the editorial board member for 8 other journals.
