In 2005 Kellee Johnson founded The Ballast Group, an integrated communications strategy firm, after serving as director of corporate marketing for Abbott Laboratories, where she managed 25 global teams. She also managed corporate communications for Tropicana, a multi-billion dollar division of PepsiCo. She connects the dots to help organizations build better relationships with stakeholders, such as prospects, customers, partners, shareholders, industry analysts, the news media and trade associations. Her work is focused in the nanotechnology, medical technology, human capital management software, healthcare, e-commerce and consumer products industries. Johnson’s strategies have helped companies like Cisco, Ultimate Software, Zyvex Technologies, Medical Simulation Corp., Kaiser Permanente, Stericycle, Safeway, and TARGET, think differently about their relationships. She facilitates executive forums, seminars for entrepreneurs and industry roundtable discussions. Johnson positions companies as thought leaders in global publications such as US News & World Report, the Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, CNN HeadlineNews, and Popular Science, in regional markets through The Boston Globe, Houston Chronicle, Denver Business Journal, Chicago Tribune, Crain's Chicago, and in trade publications including Industry Week, Composites World, JAMA News, and more. Johnson is an adjunct professor in DePaul University’s College of Communication. She holds a M.A. in mass communications with an emphasis on medicine and law from the University of South Florida, and a B.A. in English and communications from Rollins College. Johnson is a member of the PR Committee for WorldChicago, a citizen diplomacy program, and of the Rollins College Alumni Board. She is a competitive sailor and has raced the Chicago-to-Mackinac Island race twice.
