Matt Helgeson is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at UC Santa Barbara. His research involves the design and processing of structured soft matter by combining microstructural characterization, rheology, and microfluidic methods. Current interests include colloidal stability and rheology of nanoparticles and proteins in self-assembling media (micelles, polymers, and structured solvents), microfluidic synthesis of novel polymer-colloids, and development of soft nanocomposite gels for advanced pharmaceuticals and consumer products.

Prof. Helgeson earned a B.S. in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2004, with a minors in colloids, polymers, and surfaces. He received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware in 2009 under the supervision of Norman Wagner and Eric Kaler. After receiving his doctorate, he performed postdoctoral research in the Novartis-MIT Center for Continuous Manufacturing under the supervision of Patrick Doyle. His honors include the American Chemical Society Victor K. LaMer Award, the Delaware Center for Composite Materials Roy L. McCullough Scholars Award, and the Neutron Scattering Society of America Prize for Outstanding Student Research.
