Jim Werner is a Technical Staff Member in the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies of Los Alamos National Laboratory. He received his B.S. in Applied Physics from Caltech in 1992 and his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Cornell University in 1998, where he was a Hertz Foundation Fellow. Werner is a recognized microscopy expert, with over 15 years experience in laser spectroscopy/optical microscopy, > 40 peer reviewed publications, 3 US Patents, and 2 pending patents. He has given several invited talks at National/International meetings and is perhaps best known for the development of a 3D tracking microscope system. His research interests include: instrument development (microscopes, flow cytometry systems, microfluidics); Laser spectroscopy (fluorescence, time-resolved, and Raman); Biophysics (cellular signaling processes, membrane dynamics, protein folding and conformational fluctuations); Nanotechnology and nano-science; Analytic and biophysical applications of single molecule detection by laser induced fluorescence.
