Summary:

SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering)active nanoparticles: Silica encapsulated SERS tagging nanoparticles (SERS dots) were developed for cellular cancer targeting in living cells. Antibody conjugated SERS dots were successfully applied for targeting HER2 and CD10 on cellular membranes and exhibited good specificity. Fluorescent-SERS dots (F-SERS dots): SERS dots with fluorescent silica layer were conjugated with specific target antibodies (BAX and BAD), and employed for the detection of apoptosis. F-SERS dots could monitor the apoptosis effectively and simultaneously through fluorescent images as well as Raman signals in both cells and tissues with high selectivity. Moreover, relative expression levels of marker proteins (CD34, Sca-1, and SP-C) in cancer stem cells could be analyzed simultaneously by the corresponding SERS intensity. Magnetic SERS dots (M-SERS dots): SERS dots with magnetic core were utilized as a multifunctional tagging material for cancer stem cell targeting and separation. Bronchio alveolar stem cells (BASCs) were separated and identified quite effectively by using M-SERS dots. QD-embedded silica NPs: We have developed highly bright and biocompatible QD based probes, consisting of multi-layered quantum dots (mQD) on silica silica NPs with silica shells layer. They can be employed as highly sensitive imaging agents owing to their biocompatibility and high sensitivity.
