New aspects in life cycle analysis of nanoparticle modified coatings (invited presentation)

This paper will discuss the different mechanisms for increasing the life cycle of solvent and water borne coatings by incorporation of predispersed Nanoparticle Oxides. These nano oxides provide better wear and UV protection and are not released as nanoparticles into the environment. The demand for enhanced scratch and wear resistance in today’s clear and pigmented coating is increasing. The idea of an everlasting surface that retains its initial properties is the driving force for the ongoing research in this field. Recently introduced additives containing Alumina, Silica, Ceria, and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles can provide improved wear and UV resistance for solvent, waterborne and UV coatings. These new nano particles are predispersed in different media and easily incorporated with low shear into aqueous, solvent borne, or solvent free UV- curing systems. Typically, low dosages of 0.5 – 2.0% provide significant and long-term scratch, mar, wear and UV resistance without adversely affecting gloss, color, clarity or other physical properties of the coatings. Depending on concentration of nano particles and their orientation in the coating film, different results were obtained. In addition to the composition of the nano particle core, surface modifications (Boundary Phase) also has a great impact on performance of the nano, and the life cycle of coatings, (longer wear and no damaging impact on the environment). These new nano silica, alumina, and zinc oxide particles can also be incorporated into pigmented coatings. These nano particles not only offer wear resistance, better adhesion, stain resistance and corrosion resistance because the nano particles create a denser film structure.; bridging bulk and molecular structures. The nano particles can also act in a synergy with poly dimethyl silicoxanes, acrylates, silica, and waxes. When high gloss is not required, combinations of the nano alumina particles with waxes and matting agents allow the formulation of semi-gloss to flat coatings. As demand for everlasting surfaces continues, questions regarding the impact of released nanoparticles from use and wear remains. Initial results from testing in conjunction with the German Paint Association show that the nanoparticles remain confined within the resin matrix and not released as individual nanoparticles.
