Abstract:

Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) are typically not systems at all…they are devices that are manifested as structures, sensors and/or actuators. This word is truly a misnomer! I believe that a real system requires a number of various functionalities to warrant this title…and so it is with MEMS. This presentation will address the requisite functions of the MEMS-based system solution through a review of a number of current and emerging high volume applications of this approach in sectors including automotive, consumer, and avionics. We will address the various functionalities of this systems concept including signal conditioning/processing circuits e.g. ASICs, DSPs; energy management, thermal management, networking, packaging from a heterogeneous and wafer-level approach as well as testing. The concept of co-design as a design strategy to minimize cost and time to market will be addressed. Research activities and application examples currently underway by international organizations will be addressed.
