Abstract:

Using controlled oxidation, double-walled carbon nanotubes are selectively functionalized on the outerwall to significantly increase water solubility. Simultaneously, the graphitic network of the inner-tube is left intact, which allows electrical conductivity of the nanotube to be retained. Electrical percolation pathways are made possible by contact between the inner-tube and non-oxidized regions of the outerwall. This allows thin films of outerwall selectively oxidized double-walled carbon nanotubes to retain electrical conductivity 65% better than similarly oxidized single-walled carbon nanotube films.
