Gold Nanocrystal Therapeutics for the Treatment of Multidrug Resistant Pathogens

Abstract:

We employ gold nanocrystal therapeutics for the treatment of multidrug resistant pathogens. Specifically, penicillin derivatives have been synthesized, and 2.0 nm gold particles have been synthesized. The penicillin derivative has been screened (both conjugated to the nanocrystal and free) against methicillin susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) and methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA)for inhibition activity. The results suggest better defense to lactamases when the penicillin derivative is conjugated to a nanocrystal. Lactamase enzymes are responsible for resistance of most beta-lactam antibiotics through hydrolyzing the lactam ring and rendering them unable to bind to their target penicillin binding proteins.
