Evaluation of Alumina/Hydroxyapatite Nanocomposites for Use as Bone Graft for Maxillofacial Reconstruction

The aim of this work is to develop Al2O3/HA nanocomposite for use as maxillofacial graft. The influence of hydroxyapatite content in the alumina matrix in the proportions of 20% and 30% were investigated. To obtain these composites was used hydroxyapatite synthesized by direct reaction technique between solutions of phosphoric acid and calcium hydroxide, and commercial alumina. The composite was compacted by uniaxial pressing at 390MPa and sintered at 1200°C/2h, and then characterized by XRD, SEM, mechanical testing of microhardness and diametral compression. The XRD results showed all the characteristics crystalline phases of the composite under study. The SEM micrographs showed grains with a homogeneous distribution, in approximately hexagonal regular shapes, and with average size smaller than 1µm. An interesting result was related to the mechanical strength of this material, because the greater the hidroxyapatite content introduced in alumina matrix, the higher the resistance. The same was observed in the diametral compression test, whose values were of 11.76, 15.06 and 16.05 MPa for the pure alumina composition, and the composites with 20% and 30% of HA, respectively. However, these results deserve more attention in the biotechnology sector, because they are promising materials for applications as bone graft in maxillofacial reconstruction.
