Effect of local curvature on the interaction between hydrophobic surfaces

Previous measurements of the attractive interaction between hydrophobic macroscopic surfaces have showed that long-range forces that are considerably stronger than the van der Waals force dominate the interaction Silica nanoparticles have been deposited on substrates using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique or a drop coating method in order to create structured and stable particulated monolayer surfaces followed by characterization of the surfaces by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Atomic force microscopy (AFM). After hydrophobization, AFM colloidal probe measurements with the hydrophobic particulated surface and a hydrophobic colloidal probe were conducted. These measurements indicate that the adhesion force is increased by a decrease in particle size.
