MEMS Applications - fluidic transport for consumer applications

Abstract:

Very often the MEMS world tends to link fluidic devices to medical and Lab-on-a-chip applications. But similar to Si-MEMS devices plastic microfluidics are more versatile. Potential applications are generally spread, similar to acceleration sensors for example. Firstly developed for automotive applications they are now also widely used in mobile phones and game controllers. In the same manner, fluidic devices can be used in spray devices for fragrances, to make model steam-trains fuming, to move toothbrushes, to control the output of a steam iron or to realize display functionalities in low power applications. Within the presentation, examples of fluid handling based on a piezo micropump and the electrowetting effect as well as some considerations regarding the necessary design rules will be given.
