Keywords: ammonia economy, renewable ammonia, electrochemical ammonia production, direct ammonia fuel cell

Abstract:

The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) is developing two key technology components required for an ammonia economy based on the use of ammonia as an energy carrier and storage medium: 1) an electrochemical process for ammonia production from affordable and renewable feedstocks and 2) a direct ammonia fuel cell (DAFC) for ammonia utilization in fuel cells for power generation and transportation. The presentation will describe ongoing research activities, key technical and economic challenges, and a preliminary strategy for the development of a commercial ammonia economy.
