Fabrication of cell substrates to determine the role of topographical cues in differentiation and tissue structure formation

Abstract:

In a broad sense, the project will focus on micro and nano-scale molding of polymer devices and studying the function of cells cultured within the devices. More specifically, the project will characterize the response of kidney and retinal cells to biophysical parameters controlled by the devices, such as flow-induced shear stress and mechanical structure of cell-adhesion surfaces. Work involves traditional cleanroom-based microfabrication and microelectromechanical system (MEMS) production, molding of polymer devices, culturing cells within the devices, and analyzing cell function using immunofluorescent labeling and other techniques.
