Innovative Gas Sensors for Sub-ppm Detection of Organophosphorus Nerve Agents by Chemically Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors

Abstract:

In this communication, we will present innovative sensors based on carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNT-FET) for detection of organophosphorus agents (OP, Sarin-like molecules). We have functionalized CNT with organic moieties reactive towards OPs that form ammonium salts after reaction, and thus generate electrical charges. We observed that it is possible to monitor this charge formation when a functionalized CNTFET is exposed to vapors of organophosphorus gases that mimics toxic nerve agents. We will also present comparison with sensors realized with similar molecules on silicon nanowire field-effect transistors. We believed that these tiny detectors based on CNTs functionalized with molecules highly reactive towards toxic OPs are very well suited for providing efficient and cost effective sensors.
