‘In situ polymerization and composite formation’ (IPCF): An important synthesis route in advanced materials science

‘In situ polymerization and composite formation’ (IPCF) types of reactions for the synthesis of ‘metal-polymer composite material’ have a potential advantage in the area of ‘synthetic material science’ since both the polymer and the nanoparticles are produced simultaneously which facilitates an intimate contact between the particles and the polymer through functionalization. Polymer encapsulated nanoparticles can serve as a heterogeneous catalyst. Metal nanoparticle-polymer composite materials have also made useful contributions in synthetic organic chemistry. Unusual transport and magnetic properties have been achieved at low temperatures in the gold nanoparticle-polyaniline composite system, whereas gold nanoparticles and polymer individually show normal physical properties. In the present study, the emergence of paramagnetism within the polymer under synthesis condition has been achieved when two diamagnetic reactant species are involved. During the reaction the paramagnetic species are formed which all covalently functionalized with the polymer backbone. This paramagnetic polymer could have potential applications in organic spintronics based research.
