Durability of Pt/MWCNT Nanocatalyst in High Temperature H3PO4/PBI PEMFC

The newest development in the field of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) aims at higher operational temperatures above 100˚C [ ] which have been the main research focus at the Energy and Materials Science Group of DTU [ ]. The durability of PEMFCs is recognized as one of the most important issues to be addressed [ ]. In the high temperature, the carbon blacks (VXC) suffer from high corrosion, which in turn triggers platinum particles, reduction of the active surface area and catalytic activity [4]. This is the major mechanism of the catalyst degradation and a key challenge to fuel cell long-term durability [ ]. Improved stability of both supports and catalysts is crucial for the technology. Hence, we were conducted a constant life tests with a series of PBI/H3PO4 high temperature PEMFC single cells on Pt/MWCNT nanoelectrocatalyst. The results obtained after three time experiment replicating, indicate that the durability, stability, activity and performance of Pt/MWCNT electrocatalyst is considerably higher than routine Pt/C electrocatalyst in mid-low temperature PEMFCs with Nafion membrane [ ].
