The Use of Nanoscale Zero Valent Iron for Environmental Remediation – Benefits and Possible Pitfalls

Abstract:

Nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) is the primary nanoscale particle that is being used for environmental remediation of contaminated groundwater and soils. Golder Associates Ltd. and HydroQual Laboratories (a wholly owned subsidiary of Golder) has been involved in both implementing nZVI remediation of contaminated sites and investigating the environmental impact of nZVI. Golder has successfully used nZVI for remediation of contaminated sites in various pilot and field scale studies through out Canada and US. The results from these tests will be discussed. Using several terrestrial (plants, earthworms and microbes) and aquatic sediment (chironomids and Hyalella) organisms, results from ecotoxicity studies performed at HydroQual will be discussed. Briefly, in the majority of parameters measured for all test organisms there were no noticeable acute or sublethal effects. The only noticeable exceptions were exposure effects observed in plants (shoot length and biomass) and in microbial populations.
