Formation of Covalently Bound Magnetic Molecular Chains

Summary:

Single molecules housing Cobalt ions with unpaired electrons are deposited onto a close packed plane of a gold crystal. These fixed magnetic Co ion exhibited a Kondo like interaction with the electron sea of the gold surface. The gold substrate with molecules adsorbed was then heated to induce chain formation, where Bromine termination of the molecules acted as placeholders in an Ullmann-type surface mediated reaction. The chains were found to have distinct magnetic centers interacting both through the substrate and through the organic ligands via covalent bonds. Effects were observed which varied in a parity effect depending on the number of molecular units in the chain.
