The Technological Challenges and Applications of Thermal Nanofluids

Summary:

Heat management is an important issue for many industrial applications such as transport, power generation, electronics amongst many others. Nanofluids are essentially a base fluid such as water or glycol, containing a suspension of primary nanoparticles in the size range of 1-100 nm’s. Nanofluids have been reported to possess enhanced thermophysical properties such as thermal conductivity and convective heat transfer coefficients compared to those of base fluids. They have generated considerable interest for their potential to increase cooling and heating efficiency in industrial applications. There are a number of technological challenges associated with these fluids such as increased viscosity, dispersion stability of the nanoparticles and increase in pump power amongst others. Nevertheless there a number of potential commercial applications that are being introduced in industry such as for metal cooling. A summary of these technological challenges and applications will be presented.
