CANdots: Nanoparticles for your Purpose

Abstract:

Due to their unique properties, fluorescent and magnetic particles are currently in the focus of great interest especially concerning material science and biomedical applications. For example, these nanocrystals are already used for security purpose as well as cancer targeting. But there is one major drawback utilizing particles produced with currently common batch methods: the reproducibility of essential properties of the particles. Because of that, problems can occur while using different batches of the same product. To solve this problem, CAN GmbH has developed a continuous flow reactor for the synthesis of highly monodisperse nanoparticles in close collaboration with the University of Hamburg. Using this technique, it is possible to carry out a 3-step organometallic synthesis achieving e.g. CdSe/CdS/ZnS (CANdot Series A) or FeOX (CANdot Series M) with great efficiency and reduced production costs. Here we report about the synthesis, properties and possible applications of our CANdot Series A Core (CdSe), Core/Shell (CdSe/CdS) and Core/Shell/Shell (CdSe/CdS/ZnS) particles. In addition, the CANdot Series M (FeOx) which can be used for contrast agent development and the CANdot Series X (rare earth doped dots) which are suitable for security labels will be introduced.
