Abstract:

Interdisciplinary research within the Nanosystems Initiative of Munich (NIM) The Cluster of Excellence NIM began in 2006 as part of the Excellence Initiative by the German federal and state governments. NIM connects more than 60 research groups in the Munich area in the fields of physics, biophysics, physical chemistry, biochemistry, biology, electrical engineering, and medicine. In close cooperation, the scientists create and develop artificial and multi-functional nanosystems for information processing, energy conversion and medical applications. In this talk we will present several current examples for multidisciplinary projects, such as, for instance, in the field of nanomedicine. Here the shared idea is to develop nano-vehicles for smart drug delivery systems. Some of the scientists provide expertise in manufacturing potential vehicle containers: for instance by using nanostructures based on self-assembling DNA or on silica. Other groups specialize in loading the nano-vehicles with drugs and directing them towards the target cells. Experts in imaging observe the uptake and trafficking of these nanoparticles. As such, they can visualize their behavior in living cells or in an artificial blood circulation model. The collaboration is completed by scientists who are already carrying out their first clinical studies. For more information please check: www.nano-initiative-munich.de
