Power Optimization of heterogeneous and MEMS based systems: “Consume more to consume less” (invited presentation)

Self-powered systems are created using MEMS-based harvesters and associated power management circuits. Conventional wisdom maximizes power generation and minimizes power consumption. While this is not wrong, through system design of an automotive harvester application it will be shown that superior power efficiency is obtained by global system design. Also for portable and wearable systems, low power is key. System power optimization traditionally imposes power consumption limitations to each individual building block. However, for energy-constrained systems, such brute force approach is not the most energy efficient. Through a case example of a wearable healthcare monitor, it will be shown that global system optimization where some system building blocks consume more leads to far superior system power efficiency.
