We present a systems design framework called iSUGAR that integrates SUGAR, SPICE, SIMULINK, FEA COMSOL, and GDS-II layout. SUGAR is known for its ease and speed of complex MEMS configuration and parameterization; SPICE is known for its breadth in simulating integrated circuits; SIMULINK is known for its graphical building-block modeling of controls and digital signal processing; COMSOL is known for its transparent interface for finite element analysis; and GDS-II is commonly used for integrated circuit photomask plotting. Because iSUGAR is based in MATLAB, a multitude of professional toolboxes and libraries of user’s algorithms are available. This idea is previously presented in packages like Coventorware and Intellisense which are able to integrate with MATLAB, SIMULINK, and SPICE. The difference with iSUGAR is its ability to configure and control all aspects of the integration within SUGAR. The selected features of iSUGAR include i) FEA Integration – SUGAR users can directly convert their models into COMSOL m-file model for FEA modeling; ii) System Configuration - Configuring MEMS geometries within COMSOL is typically done with geometric Boolean arithmetic, which can be time-consuming. In iSUGAR we developed an algorithm that can translate 3D MEMS configurations created in SUGAR to COMSOL; iii) Layout – iSUGAR can automatically generate layout file in GDS-II format.
