High Dispersion CNT-Enhanced Cathodes for Next Generation Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:

SWeNT has successfully produced a novel nanocomposite paste material comprising highly dispersed CNTs that facilitates incorporation in Li-ion batteries. These nanocomposites are made using proprietary CNT synthesis, purification and dispersion technologies. SWeNT has been able to design CNTs that consistently form efficient, robust conductive networks at lower weight loadings than any other carbon material, with substantially lower metallic impurity levels than current competitor CNT materials. The “tailored” CNT material is prepared in a slurry or paste to enable proper dispersion in the cathode formulation. In only a few simple battery screening tests, we were able to highlight performance improvements of exciting magnitude. Only one weight percent of SWeNT’s Speciality Multi-Wall (SMW) CNTs was needed in cathode formulations to replace 6 wt% carbon and graphite while also lowering binder demand to give equivalent rate performance thus enabling an increase in the amount of active material and resultant energy density.
