Electrochemiluminescent sensor for clinical analysis based on Carbon Nanotube electrodes

Presented application is based on the use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for biomolecular analysis using electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection technique. For this purpose we have grown self standing cylinder-shaped blocks of Multi wall CNTs (MWCNTs) by means of a catalytic chemical vapour deposition system, fed by gases formed in consequence of the co-evaporation of camphor (carbon precursor) and ferrocene (metal catalyst) in a nitrogen atmosphere. The blocks were subsequently back-contacted and encapsulated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as electrical insulator and sealant for their use as voltammetric electrodes. A ruthenium-complex solution was used as ECL label. The experiments show that by using MWCNTs electrodes it is possible to obtain a great increase in detection limit compared to usual Au electrodes and the reproducibility in ECL signal can be achieved.
