State-of-the-Art Clean Coal Power and Technology Options for CO2 Capture

Clean and efficient utilization of coal is essential for the economy and national energy security in the United States. Coal contributes to about one half of the electricity generation in the US and is expected to maintain its dominant share in the foreseeable future. The state-of-the-art coal-fired power plant today is about 20% more efficient than the average existing power plants, and can reduce pollutant emissions to ultra-low levels. This presentation will give a brief overview of component technologies such as the supercritical boiler, steam turbine, air quality control system, and their performance including plant efficiency and emissions such as SO2, NOx, mercury and other trace pollutants. Technology options under development by Hitachi to meet upcoming CO2 regulations, including the next generation ultrasupercritical power plant (at 1300 ºF, 5000 psi) and CO2 capture systems based on post-combustion absorption or oxyfuel combustion, as well as the effectiveness and economic impact of these options, will be discussed.
