Propensity of Nanoparticles to Release from Soft Furnishings (keynote presentation)

Abstract:

Using layer-by-layer assembly, foam and barrier fabrics were coated with nanoparticles, such as carbon nanotubes and nanofibers. This is the first report of using this process to coat these types of substrates using these type of nanoparticles. While aggregates were observed the coatings were found to be fairly homogeneous by SEM. These substrates were physically stressed to evaluate the propensity for the nanoparticles to be released at conditions similar to those mattresses and upholstered furniture would experience during their service life. The impact of stressing and nanoparticle release on fire performance was also measured.
