Review of Carbon Nanostructure Applications for Supercapacitors (invited presentation)

Supercapacitors play a niche role as an energy storage medium for quick energy release with high discharge rates. Modification of carbon nanostructures via functionalization provides the much needed control of the surface area as well as porosity that are critical for supercapacitors. Carbon nanostructures in the electrodes play an important role within the double layer and provide considerable enhancement compared to other materials. This talk will mainly focus on the incorporation of carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers and graphene as electrodes and electrolytes. Surface area and porosity control of different carbon nanostructures including carbon sponge will be discussed. Status of hybrid supercapacitors based on these carbon nanostructures and carbon nano composites will also be presented.
