There is a significant potential for energy storage on the grid: storing energy during times of low demand to supply customers during peak load times without the need for additional generation capacity. Energy storage capacity will make renewable energy, whose power output cannot be controlled by grid operators, smooth and dispatchable. Storage technologies can also stabilize the grid, enable micro-grids, and provide reliable backup for critical facilities such as hospitals or data centers.

The field recently received a boost in the US when the State of California announced an energy storage plan requiring the state's utilities to buy 1.3 gigawatts of energy storage capacity by the end of 2020. It continues to be an area of strong investment community interest.

You are invited to submit abstracts describing new materials and device development, and also describing the path to commercialization of novel energy storage systems.
