Behaviour of mesoporous silica (MCM-41) supported catalysts in degradation reactions

Research was carried out to investigate several aspects of Mobil’s composition of matter #41 (MCM-41) pertaining to its potential application in water treatment technologies. It was found that Pd-impregnated MCM-41 (Pd/MCM-41) has enhanced stability in water at 25oC relative to both pure silica MCM-41 and Ni-impregnated MCM-41. Hydrogen absorption and release by Pd/MCM-41 was investigated at 25oC and up to approximately 101.3 kPa. 0.85 moles of hydrogen were absorbed per mole of Pd present in the samples. This is in excess of most other, published Pd-hydrogen systems. Batch and column degradation experiments demonstrated the longevity of Pd/MCM-41 in treatment of trichloroethylene (TCE) in hydrogen-saturated, deionized water while degrading more than 91% of inflow TCE concentrations.
