One-step synthesis and photocatalytic properties of VOx-TiO2 nanocomposite catalysts under UV and visible light conditions

Simple synthesis method was applied for nanocomposite materials composed of vanadium oxide and titanium oxide. Agglomerated nanocomposite materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and UV-visible diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). Compositions of multi-component catalysts were varied by vanadium precursor amount and band gap energies were measured for various samples by UV-vis DRS. Photocatalytic activities of prepared samples were investegated by the degradation of methylene blue and phenol under 250 W Xe-lamp radiation with various longpass filters for UV and visible light condition. The results show that the as-prepared VOx-TiO2 nanocomposites have different degradation abilities of methylene blue and phenol solution dependent on the amount of vanadium oxide and the wavelength of exposed light source.
