The production of materials and fuels from biological sources - industrial biotechnology or white biotechnology – offers exciting new opportunities for fossil fuel substitution and the development of commercially important materials from non-fossil raw materials. The commercial use of enzymes and micro-organisms (cell factories) to make bio-based chemicals, detergents, paper and pulp, textiles and bioenergy (such as biofuels or biogas) provides of the most promising, innovative approaches towards lowering greenhouse gas emissions. A recent report by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) concludes that the climate change mitigation potential of biotechnology processes and bio-based products ranges from between one billion and 2.5 billion tons CO2 equivalent per year by 2030 - more than Germany’s total reported emissions in 1990.
This special event will include sessions focused on business and implementation of industrial or white biotechnology (sharing of best practices, success stories, and case studies), and will also include sessions highlighting innovative materials and process developments which may lead to future breakthroughs.
