Review of Carbon Nanostructures in Supercapacitors

Summary:

In recent years, energy storage using carbon nanostructures (CNSs) such as fullerenes, nanotubes, nanocones and graphene is gaining a considerable interest for portable and stationary power sources. Special emphasis is on supercapacitors that can provide high energy and high power densities. The performance of supercapacitors depends on the choice of electrode and electrolyte materials. Direct modification of CNSs and their incorporation in metal oxides show considerable future potential for improved supercapacitor performance. The structural stability and capacitive performance of single wall and multi wall carbon nanotubes under direct irradiation will be discussed. The enhanced capacitance behavior of nanocomposites of CNSs in metal oxides will be reviewed. The charge storage mechanisms involving the contribution from double-layer, Faradaic and the intercalation mechanisms will be presented.
