In-situ Decoration and Doping of TiO2 Nanotube Arrays

Abstract:

This paper reports on synthesis of self-organized titanium oxide nanotubes decorated/doped with strontium as a potential material with functional properties for photoelectrochemical applications. Electrochemical anodization process was used to grow the nanotubes at different electrochemical conditions followed by heat treatment. The effect of dopant amount and the type of electrolyte on Sr-doped TiO2 with porous and tubular morphologies were investigated. The microstructure, morphology and composition of as-prepared and heat treated nanotubes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDX), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A comparison was made between the morphology and composition as well as photoelectrochemical properties of the doped and decorated TiO2 nanotubes. Results of photoelectrochemical measurements revealed that Sr-doping significantly contributes in improvement of the photoconversion efficiency of the nanotubes.
