Hydrophobic patterning to enhance pool boiling

Abstract:

In this work we investigate the heat transfer performance of surfaces patterned with hydrophobic islands 50 to 200 microns in diameter. The performance was characterized in a pool boiling experiment with water as the working fluid. Compared to a plain hydrophilic surface the patterned surfaces double the heat transfer coefficient and increase the critical heat flux by 50 percent.
