Executive Summary:A new method for fabricating printed semiconductors, developed by Nth, utilizes inorganic semiconductor inks. Microscopic devices (e.g. diodes, transistors, sensors, etc.) that are as small as ink particles are built using traditional wafer patterning and are manufactured in semiconductor foundries for the specific end-product characteristics. Nth has patented and patent pending ink technology that allows a standard high-speed printing press to print this ink so that the specific semiconductor properties are transferred to paper, plastic or other substrate materials. The traditional semiconductor processes of device packaging and integrated device manufacturing are replaced with a single and simpler, high volume printing process. Printed semiconductors made with these inks reduce the cost of producing semiconductor-based devices while creating innovative products that can be curvilinear, soft and flexible. The first semiconductor device is a Light Emitting Diode (LED). This LED ink is being used to print area lighting. The first product is a lightweight and flexible printed LED lamp. Converted into a flat panel to replace fluorescent tube fixtures, this innovative lighting product goes beyond energy efficiency, offering significant labor savings for the new construction and retrofit market.
