Microwave Assisted Transesterification of Waste Frying Oil and Concentrate Methyl Ester Content of Biodiesel by Molecular Distillation

Abstract:

Obtaining biodiesel from waste frying oil (0.8mgKOH/g acid value) by transesterification was carried out using microwave assisted heating system. Transesterification reactions were carried out at 55-60-65oC, 3-5-8-10 min, 1:4-1:5-1:6 oil:methanol ratio and 0.5-0.75-1.0-1.5% (w/w) NaOCH3 catalyst ratio. Methyl ester content of biodiesel was determined as 91.09-98.85% and maximum conversion was obtained at 60oC, 5 min, 1% (w/w) NaOCH3 and 1:6 oil:methanol molar ratio. Biodiesel, methyl ester content is lower than European standard EN 14214, was applied to molecular distillation to separate undesired components such as mono-, di-, tri-glyceride. Distillation was performed at constant pressure of 10 mbar at different temperature (170, 180, 190, 200oC) and feed flow rate (0.12, 0.18, 0.24 mL/min). Purified biodiesel (97.74% methyl ester) was obtained using 0.18 mL/min feed flow at 170oC temperature.
