Biomass Combined Heat and Power– a Comparison of Options for Small-scale Systems

Abstract:

Biomass heating is poised for rapid growth in the residential and commercial building sectors due to an improving regulatory climate, availability of sustainable biomass supplies, and sustained high oil prices. It can be attractive to generate electricity in addition to providing thermal load using a biomass combined heat and power (CHP) system. The technology for CHP is evolving steadily and there have been recent advances in small-scale systems in the 3 kW to 100 kW range. In this review paper we compare the efficiency and emissions of leading technology candidates for current and future small-scale CHP, including steam boiler and turbine (Rankine) on solid biomass fuels, micro-turbines and internal combustion engines on biogas and liquid biofuels, and Stirling systems on solid biomass fuels and biogas.
