Nanomaterials as Catalysts Heterogeneous catalysts have surface properties that facilitate chemical reactions. The most effective of these catalysts are often precious metals or metal complexes, and are quite expensive. Nanotechnology offers the potential to drastically decrease the amount of precious metal necessary to operate catalytic reactors. Due to the fact that a decrease in the characteristic length of an object results in a proportional increase in its surface area-volume ratio, nanomaterials offer an enormous catalytic surface area for a given amount of material. In addition, their unique surface properties can eliminate unwanted side-reactions and/or increase catalyst durability.
