Synopsis
Biomass has the potential to supply a significant amount of biofuel not only for electricity production and process heat, but also for transportation fuels. The US government has set ambitious goals for bioenergy production over the next 10 years that include grain-based ethanol production, advanced biofuels from lignocellulosic feedstocks, and biodiesel/jet fuel from oilseed crops and algae. In order to meet this demand, sustainable and economic production of feedstocks and development of scalable and economic conversion technologies will be necessary.
