Dr. Richard J. Erdlac, Jr. is an energy consultant in Midland, Texas with specialties in oil, gas, and geothermal development. He has also conducted general energy investigations involving solar and wind energy. Until recently, Dr. Erdlac was the Director of Research and Commercialization for Energy America Inc. and Energy America Geothermal in Midland. He has been a Research Scientist at the Center for Energy and Economic Diversification (CEED) and a Senior Lecturer at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB). He has 28 years with the oil and gas and academic communities.

Dr. Erdlac has a B.S. in physics, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in structural geology. He started his career in 1980 as an exploration geophysicist with Gulf Oil E&P Corporation, first in the offshore Gulf of Mexico and then conducting onshore exploration throughout the Permian Basin. He has worked for the University of Texas Bureau of Ecnonomic Geology, Odessa College, Texas Tech University, and was a co-founder, Chair and Director of the West Texas Earth Resources Institute (WTERI), a non-profit research group in Midland, Texas.

Dr. Erdlac has conducted surface and subsurface mapping projects in the Gulf of Mexico, The Permian Basin, Guatemala, and various parts of the Trans-Pecos region. Much of this mapping has focused on the structure and tectonics of these regions. In 1998, Dr. Erdlac and his friend and colleague Douglas Swift co-developed the concept of “Deep Permeable Strata Geothermal Energy” with focus on the West Texas geothermal potential. Dr. Erdlac has acquired over $1.3 million in funding and over $1.5 million in data and software grants to further Permian Basin research activities while at WTERI and CEED. He has over 100 published articles, abstracts, and various oral presentations.
