Michael R. Montoya is the director of Engineering Advancement for Southern California Edison’s Transmission & Distribution Business Unit (TDBU). Montoya’s organization, created in November 2004, is responsible for distributed energy resources, distribution technical innovation, power system technologies, distribution automation, satellite communications, and research and development.

Throughout his 35 year career, Montoya has made many contributions in his technical and managerial roles. Prior to becoming Engineering Advancement director, he was previously responsible for managing the TDBU portion of the company’s 2006 General Rate Case; was director of the TDBU Project Management organization and director of Grid Operations, Protection and Controls. Before that, Montoya held several positions, including manager of transmission substation projects, superintendent of transmission construction and maintenance, and superintendent of substation operations and maintenance. He also held supervisory and bargaining‐unit positions within the former Transmission and Substation division.

Montoya has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and certificates in I.T. Essentials for Business Leadership from Pepperdine University and Sustaining the Innovative Organization from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
